The profile, defined.

A well-proportioned chin anchors the entire face — it defines the jawline, balances the nose, and gives the profile its structure. Dr. Larry Nichter uses precise implant placement to bring the chin into proportion with the rest of the face, permanently and naturally.

The procedure

Chin Augmentation in Newport Beach

Chin augmentation — known medically as genioplasty — is a surgical procedure that permanently enhances the size, shape, and projection of the chin using a biocompatible silicone implant. It improves facial balance by bringing a recessed or underdeveloped chin into proportion with the nose, jawline, and neck.

The chin plays a larger role in facial harmony than most people realize. A chin that lacks projection can make the nose appear larger, the neck less defined, and the jawline weaker — even when those features are normal in isolation. Patients who seek chin augmentation often describe a general dissatisfaction with their profile or feel that their face lacks a sense of balance, without being able to pinpoint exactly why.

Chin augmentation is frequently combined with rhinoplasty to refine the full profile in a single procedure, or with a neck lift to enhance jawline-to-neck definition. It is one of the most efficient facial procedures — typically completed in under an hour — with permanent results and a short recovery.

His approach

An Eye for Proportion

Dr. Larry Nichter, board-certified plastic surgeon

Chin augmentation is a surgery of relationships. The chin does not exist in isolation — its ideal size and projection depend on the nose, the jawline, the neck, and the overall proportions of the face. Placing an implant is straightforward; knowing which implant, how much projection, and exactly where to position it is where surgical judgment matters.

Dr. Nichter evaluates the chin in the context of the full face. During consultation, he assesses facial proportions from the front and in profile, considers the relationship between the chin and nose, and determines whether the concern is best addressed with augmentation alone or in combination with other procedures. For patients whose profile would benefit from both a stronger chin and a refined nose, he often recommends combining chin augmentation with rhinoplasty — a pairing that addresses the profile as a whole rather than a single feature.

He selects from a range of implant sizes and shapes to match each patient's anatomy, preferring a result that looks like the chin you might have been born with — defined and balanced, not conspicuously augmented. His published research informs a precise understanding of the facial anatomy that determines where an implant sits, how it integrates with the surrounding tissue, and how it will look not just at six weeks but at six years.

Is it right for you

Am I a Good Candidate for Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is appropriate for healthy adults with fully developed facial features who are dissatisfied with the projection, shape, or definition of their chin and profile. The best candidates have a specific concern — not a vague sense of wanting to look different — and realistic expectations about what augmentation can achieve.

Chin augmentation may be right for you if:

  • Your chin is recessed or "weak," sitting behind the lower lip in profile
  • Your face appears unbalanced, with the nose or neck seeming disproportionate
  • You lack definition along the jawline that you would like to improve
  • Jowling or soft tissue laxity obscures the chin and jaw
  • You are in good general health and do not smoke, or are willing to stop before surgery

Chin augmentation may not be recommended for patients with certain dental or jaw alignment conditions, significant gum disease, or lip protrusion that would be better addressed through orthodontic treatment. Dr. Nichter evaluates all of this during consultation and will recommend the most appropriate approach — or advise against surgery if it would not serve your goals.

What to expect

Your Chin Augmentation Experience

Consultation and Planning

Dr. Nichter examines your facial structure from multiple angles, assessing the chin's projection relative to the nose, jawline, and neck. He discusses implant options — size, shape, and material — and explains what each would achieve for your specific anatomy. If rhinoplasty or another procedure would complement the augmentation, he discusses that as well. You leave with a clear and detailed plan.

The Day of Your Procedure

Chin augmentation is typically performed under local anesthesia with oral or IV sedation, though general anesthesia is available. The procedure takes approximately thirty to sixty minutes.

Dr. Nichter makes a small incision either inside the mouth, along the lower gum line, or externally beneath the chin — both approaches produce minimal visible scarring. Through this incision, he creates a precise pocket over the chin bone and places the implant in the position determined during planning. The implant — made of soft, biocompatible silicone — is shaped and sized to match your anatomy. Once positioned, the surrounding tissue secures it in place. The incision is closed with fine sutures.

If combined with rhinoplasty or a neck lift, the total operative time extends accordingly, but recovery is combined into a single period.

Immediately After

The sedation clears quickly. Most patients go home within an hour or two. A chin strap or light dressing supports the implant during initial healing. A friend or family member will need to drive you home.

Recovery

Recovery and Downtime

Chin augmentation has one of the shorter recoveries among facial procedures. Most patients are surprised at how quickly they return to their routine.

The First Few Days

Expect swelling, tightness, and tenderness around the chin and lower face. Some bruising may appear. Discomfort is typically mild — manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter medication. A chin strap or dressing supports the implant and should be worn as directed, usually for one to three days. Stick to a soft or liquid diet to minimize jaw movement. Speech may feel slightly awkward for the first day or two due to swelling.

Week One

Swelling begins to subside. Most patients feel well enough to return to work and normal daily activities within five to seven days, though some residual swelling is still present. Continue to avoid chewing hard foods. If the incision is inside the mouth, rinse gently as directed. Avoid any impact or pressure on the chin.

Weeks Two Through Six

The chin begins to look and feel more natural as swelling resolves. Light exercise can resume around week two, as cleared by Dr. Nichter. The majority of visible swelling is gone by three to four weeks, though subtle swelling may persist for up to six weeks. Avoid vigorous exercise, contact sports, and any direct impact to the chin during this period.

Six Weeks and Beyond

By six weeks, most swelling has resolved and the implant has settled into its final position. Full activity can resume. The implant integrates with the surrounding tissue over time and will feel similar to natural bone.

Results

Permanent, natural balance.

You will see an improvement in chin projection and profile definition almost immediately, though the final result is obscured by swelling for the first several weeks. The true shape and proportion of the augmentation become clear by four to six weeks, with subtle refinement continuing over the following months.

Chin augmentation results are permanent. The silicone implant does not break down, shift, or need replacement under normal circumstances. While the natural aging process continues — skin may loosen, soft tissue may change — the improved chin projection and facial balance remain. This is one of the few facial procedures where a single intervention produces a lifelong result.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the implant feel natural?

Yes. Silicone chin implants are made of a soft, biocompatible material that, once healed, feels similar to the natural chin bone beneath it. Most patients — and the people around them — cannot distinguish the implant from natural anatomy by touch.

Is chin augmentation permanent?

The implant itself is permanent and does not break down or need routine replacement. Results are considered lifelong. If a patient's goals change, the implant can be removed or exchanged, but this is uncommon.

Where is the incision made?

Dr. Nichter places the incision either inside the mouth (along the lower gum line) or externally beneath the chin. Both approaches produce minimal visible scarring. The choice depends on the implant being used and the surgical plan, and is discussed during consultation.

Can chin augmentation be combined with rhinoplasty?

Yes — this is one of the most common combinations in facial surgery. Because the chin and nose define the profile together, addressing both at once produces a more balanced result than correcting either in isolation. Combining them means one anesthesia session and one recovery.

How long should I take off work?

Most patients return to work within five to seven days. If your work involves physical activity or heavy lifting, plan for two weeks. Dr. Nichter provides guidance specific to your recovery.

Are there non-surgical alternatives?

Dermal fillers can add temporary chin projection without surgery. However, fillers require repeat treatments every twelve to eighteen months, cannot achieve the same degree of projection as an implant, and cost more over time. For patients who want a permanent, defined result, an implant is the more effective option.

Can chin augmentation fix a double chin?

Chin augmentation improves chin projection and profile definition, which can create the appearance of a more defined jawline. However, it does not remove excess fat or tighten loose skin beneath the chin. For those concerns, a neck lift or liposuction may be more appropriate — and can be combined with chin augmentation for a comprehensive result.

Schedule Your Consultation

If your profile has always bothered you — or if you have noticed that your face seems unbalanced without being able to say why — a consultation can provide clarity. Dr. Nichter will evaluate your facial proportions, discuss what chin augmentation can achieve for your anatomy, and explain whether additional procedures would complement the result.
