The procedure

Mommy Makeover in Newport Beach

A mommy makeover is not a single procedure — it is a customized combination of surgeries designed to address the physical changes that pregnancy, breastfeeding, and childbirth leave behind. The specific procedures vary from patient to patient based on individual anatomy and goals. Common components include a tummy tuck, breast augmentation or lift, liposuction, and occasionally additional procedures such as vaginal rejuvenation. Other procedures — including a face or neck lift — can also be combined when appropriate.

The body changes that follow pregnancy are well documented: stretched abdominal muscles that separate and do not return to their original position, loose abdominal skin, breast volume loss or sagging, and stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise. These changes are structural — they cannot be fully reversed through fitness alone, no matter how disciplined the effort.

A mommy makeover addresses multiple concerns in a single surgery. This is its primary advantage: rather than undergoing separate procedures months apart — each with its own anesthesia, recovery period, and time away from your family — the work is done at once. One plan. One surgery. One recovery.

His approach

Every Plan Is Built From Scratch

Dr. Larry Nichter, board-certified plastic surgeon

There is no standard mommy makeover. The term describes a framework — combining procedures — but the substance is entirely individual. A patient whose primary concern is abdominal laxity needs a different surgical plan than one whose concern is breast volume loss. A patient who wants liposuction of the flanks in addition to a tummy tuck has different anatomy than one who does not. Dr. Nichter builds each plan from the patient's anatomy and goals, not from a preset menu.

His range across procedures is the foundation of this approach. Dr. Nichter performs breast augmentation, breast lifts (including his California Breast Lift® — a minimal-scar technique using fat transfer to restore mild volume loss), tummy tucks, liposuction, Brazilian Butt Lifts, and vaginal rejuvenation — all at a level where each could stand alone. In a mommy makeover, they are combined strategically: the liposuction that contours the flanks can supply fat for breast or buttock augmentation. The tummy tuck that repairs separated muscles can be extended to address the mons area. Each procedure complements the others.

Scarless breast augmentation. Dr. Nichter has refined a technique that places a breast implant through the tummy-tuck (abdominoplasty) incision, leaving no scars on the breasts themselves — an option for patients having both procedures together.

The surgical judgment required to combine procedures safely — managing anesthesia time, blood loss, tissue stress, and recovery demands — comes from experience. Dr. Nichter has performed these combinations across thousands of patients.

Is it right for you

Am I a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is appropriate for patients who want to address multiple body concerns from pregnancy and childbirth in a single surgical session. Despite the name, the procedure is not limited to mothers — it can benefit anyone experiencing similar body changes from aging, weight fluctuation, or genetics.

A mommy makeover may be right for you if:

  • You have completed your family — a future pregnancy could reverse the results
  • You have concerns in more than one area (breasts, abdomen, body contour) that you want addressed together
  • You are at or near a stable weight — significant weight loss after surgery may affect results
  • You are in good general health
  • You are a non-smoker and do not use other forms of nicotine, or are willing to stop well in advance of surgery
  • You can arrange help at home during recovery — especially if you have young children

Timing matters. Dr. Nichter recommends waiting at least six months after delivery, and longer if you are still breastfeeding, to allow your body to stabilize before surgery. This ensures the surgical plan is based on your settled anatomy, not a body still in transition.

What to expect

What to Expect

Consultation and Planning

This is the most important step. Dr. Nichter examines your breasts, abdomen, and body contour. He discusses which changes concern you most and which procedures would address them. He explains the trade-offs of combining procedures versus staging them, and recommends the combination that balances your goals with surgical safety. You leave with a clear, individualized plan.

Special precautions are taken during longer combined surgeries to minimize complications — for example, sequential pneumatic compression stockings that gently massage the lower legs to prevent swelling and reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Day of Surgery

A mommy makeover is performed under general anesthesia. Surgery typically takes three to six hours depending on the number and complexity of procedures included. Dr. Nichter sequences the procedures to minimize total anesthesia time while ensuring each component receives the attention it requires.

Immediately After

You are monitored as anesthesia clears. Most patients go home the same day, though an overnight stay may be recommended for more extensive combinations. You will wear compression garments over the treated areas. Someone must drive you home and stay with you for the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours.

Recovery

Recovery and Downtime

Recovery from a mommy makeover is more involved than any single procedure because multiple areas are healing simultaneously. But this is also the advantage: you recover from everything at once, rather than repeating the process.

The First Few Days

Expect significant soreness, swelling, and limited mobility. The abdomen is typically the most uncomfortable area, particularly if a tummy tuck with muscle repair is included. Prescription pain medication manages discomfort. Move carefully — you will need help with daily tasks and childcare. Sleep in an elevated or reclined position to reduce tension on the abdomen.

Week One

Bruising and swelling remain prominent. You will not be able to stand fully upright if a tummy tuck was performed — this improves gradually over the first week or two. Light walking is encouraged to promote circulation. Avoid lifting anything heavier than a few pounds — this includes children. Drains, if placed, are typically removed within the first one to two weeks.

Weeks Two Through Four

Most patients begin returning to light daily activity by week two. Swelling continues to diminish. The abdominal area feels progressively more comfortable. Many patients return to desk work by week two or three. Avoid exercise, heavy lifting, and straining. If breast procedures were included, follow breast-specific care instructions regarding support and activity.

Six Weeks and Beyond

By six weeks, most activity restrictions are lifted. Exercise can resume gradually, starting with low-impact activity and building from there. Internal healing — particularly in the abdominal muscles — continues for several months. Scars continue to fade and soften over six to twelve months. Final results are typically visible at six months to one year, depending on the procedures performed.

Practical planning: Arrange help at home for at least the first two weeks — especially with childcare and household tasks. Prepare meals in advance. Set up a comfortable recovery area where you can rest without needing to bend, reach, or lift.

Results

Natural, lasting improvement.

The results of a mommy makeover emerge gradually. Initial improvement is visible within weeks as swelling and bruising subside. Breast shape refines over two to three months. The abdominal contour continues to improve for six months or more as internal swelling resolves and repaired muscles fully heal. Final results — across all areas — are typically apparent at six months to one year.

The changes are lasting. A tummy tuck permanently removes excess skin and repairs muscle separation. Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from treated areas. Breast implants maintain their volume long-term. The overall result is a body that reflects your actual fitness and effort, freed from the structural changes that pregnancy imposed.

Maintaining a stable weight preserves the result. Significant weight gain or a future pregnancy can alter the outcome, which is why Dr. Nichter recommends completing your family before undergoing a mommy makeover.

Investment

Cost and Financing

The cost of a mommy makeover varies significantly because no two plans are the same. It depends on which procedures are included, the complexity of each, anesthesia time, and facility requirements. A detailed quote is provided after consultation, once Dr. Nichter has assessed your anatomy and discussed your goals.

Combining procedures in a single session is typically more cost-effective than having them performed separately — one anesthesia fee, one facility fee, one recovery period.

Financing options are available — please ask at your consultation.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What procedures are included in a mommy makeover?

There is no fixed set. A mommy makeover is customized to your specific concerns. The most common combination is a tummy tuck with a breast procedure (augmentation, lift, or both) and liposuction. Additional procedures — such as a Brazilian Butt Lift, vaginal rejuvenation, or hernia repair — can be included based on your goals.

How long does a mommy makeover take?

Three to six hours, depending on the number and complexity of procedures. Dr. Nichter plans the surgical sequence to minimize total anesthesia time.

How long until I can pick up my children?

Most patients should avoid lifting more than a few pounds for the first two to three weeks. Lifting children is typically safe by four to six weeks, depending on the child's weight and how your recovery is progressing. Plan to have help at home.

Do I need to be done having children?

Dr. Nichter recommends completing your family before a mommy makeover. A future pregnancy can stretch the repaired muscles, loosen the tightened skin, and alter breast results. The procedure is not dangerous if you do become pregnant afterward, but the results may be compromised.

How long after giving birth should I wait?

At least six months — longer if you are breastfeeding. Your body needs time to stabilize after pregnancy and nursing. Operating on tissue that is still in flux leads to less predictable results.

Can I have a mommy makeover if I haven't had children?

Yes. The name is colloquial. The procedure addresses body changes from any cause — aging, weight fluctuation, or genetics. If you have concerns in multiple areas that would benefit from a combined surgical approach, you may be a candidate.

Is it safer to combine procedures or do them separately?

Both approaches are safe when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. Combining procedures means one round of anesthesia and one recovery, which many patients prefer. However, if the total scope of surgery exceeds safe time limits, Dr. Nichter will recommend staging the procedures into two sessions. Safety determines the plan.
