Dr. Larry Nichter Featured in Time Magazine’s Landmark Article

“Nip. Tuck. Or Else.”

Back in 2015, Time Magazine’s front cover featured Dr. Larry Nichter in its now-iconic article by Joel Stein, “Nip. Tuck. Or Else,” . The article highlighted  a woman’s journey seeking facial rejuvenation and how she selected a Dr. Nichter from other Plastic Surgeons from Beverly Hills, West LA and Newport Beach,  California.. The piece ignited global discussion about the rapidly evolving role of cosmetic surgery in modern culture.

At the time, the article highlighted the rising influence of social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, noting how constant photo-sharing was shaping the demand for aesthetic procedures. It described a world shifting toward a “24/7 red carpet culture,” where people are increasingly aware of how they present themselves online.

Why the Article Still Resonates :

Nearly a decade later, the insights from that article feel even more relevant:

1. The Zoom & AI Effect

Remote work, video meetings, and now AI-enhanced filters have made people more aware than ever of their on-screen appearance—driving demand for facial refinement and rejuvenation.

2. Preventative Aesthetics

Younger generations are embracing early injectables, lasers, and skin-tightening treatments to delay the signs of aging rather than correct them later.

3. Men & Aesthetics

The stigma has faded. More men are choosing both surgical and non-surgical enhancements, recognizing the benefits for confidence, career presence, and personal branding.

4. The Non-Invasive Boom

Treatments like fat-melting technology, advanced fillers, regenerative medicine, and skin-tightening devices continue to dominate—offering transformative results without surgery.

A Cultural Shift: More Than Vanity

As Time predicted, aesthetic procedures have become part of the modern lifestyle—not out of vanity, but as a reflection of:

  • self-confidence
  • professional presence
  • digital identity
  • personal empowerment

Today, patients are not just seeking to look better—they’re seeking to feel more like themselves, both in person and online.

Dr. Nichter’s Perspective

Dr. Larry Nichter has always emphasized that cosmetic surgery and non-surgical treatments should be about self-confidence, balance, and authenticity. The decision isn’t about competing with others—it’s about helping individuals look as vibrant as they feel.

The conversation started in Time Magazine continues today. With advancements in safety, technology, and technique, patients now have more choices than ever to pursue natural, personalized results.

New : Motiva® and Sientra Silicone Implants

Women considering silicone implants still have high-quality options designed to offer a natural feel, durable shell design, and long-term reliability. Modern silicone implants use improved cohesive gels and advanced manufacturing standards that enhance both safety and aesthetics.

These advancements matter because today’s silicone implants are available only through board-certified or board-eligible plastic surgeons, ensuring patients receive care from surgeons with the highest level of training, experience, and oversight. This provides an additional layer of safety and trust for anyone choosing silicone over saline.

Choosing the Right Implant for You

Women have more options than ever:

SERENE Implants® — ideal for peace of mind, saline safety, and a natural look without the risk of silent rupture. Monitoring is just a glance in the mirror to ensure the implant integrity. Dr. Nichter recommends that implants do not need to be changed unless there is a rupture as the replacement is simple and would not require a capsulectomy (removal of the capsule).

Modern Silicone Implants like Motiva, Sientra, and others— great for patients who prefer the feel of silicone and want advanced gel technology with improved shape retention and durability, available exclusively through highly qualified plastic surgeons. FDA guidelines are to monitor implants at 5-6 years with a MRI or Ultrasound to make sure there is not a silent rupture. If so they will need to be replaced. As the majority of implants rupture between 11-19 years, Dr. Nichter recommends that his patients consider replacement at 10-12 yrs prior to rupture as a simple procedure. If a rupture occurs than a capsulectomy is often required.

The best choice depends on your anatomy, aesthetic goals, and comfort level with saline versus silicone.

SERENE vs. Silicone Gel Implants

When it comes to breast augmentation, women consider far more than a natural look and feel. Safety, peace of mind, and long-term outcomes are just as important.

While FDA-approved silicone gel implants are safe, they come with the possibility of silent rupture—a rupture that can only be detected through MRI or ultrasound. If a gel implant ruptures, both the implant and surrounding capsule typically need to be removed in a procedure called a capsulectomy.

The SERENE Structured Implant® (formerly IDEAL Implant®) was created to address these concerns while still delivering a natural, beautiful result.

Advantages of SERENE Implants®

Rupture Advantages

  • No silent ruptures — you always know if an implant is intact
  • Saline filler is safely absorbed by the body if rupture occurs
  • No MRI required — visual confirmation is enough
  • Easier removal and replacement compared to gel implants

Filler Advantages

  • Only saline inside — no silicone gel in the body
  • Peace of mind with the safety of saline
  • Natural look and feel thanks to structured internal design

Clinical Advantages

  • Youthful breast shape and contour
  • Lower capsular contracture rate compared to many gel implants
  • High rupture strength and low rupture rate shown in clinical studies

The Cuba Missions

The organization first traveled to Cuba more than a decade ago, when Dr. Nichter and his team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and pediatric specialists performed reconstructive surgeries for children suffering from severe burns, congenital deformities, and other conditions that limited their quality of life.

In 2016, after years of political restrictions, the team returned to the Hospital Pediátrico Universitario in Cienfuegos. That mission included:

  • Plastic surgeons, general surgeons, and an orthodontist (a first for the team in Cuba)
  • Anesthesiologists, nurses, and pediatricians are supporting patient care
  • Scores of surgeries, including complex burn repair, flap procedures, and breast reconstruction for cancer survivors

Beyond performing surgeries, Mission Plasticos shared technical knowledge and advanced reconstructive techniques with local medical teams, ensuring that Cuban surgeons could continue providing these procedures long after the mission ended.

Patient Safety : What We Learned from COVID-19 and How It Shapes Modern Plastic Surgery

Discover how lessons from COVID-19 continue to shape safer plastic surgery practices :—from advanced infection control to personalized patient care.

Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way we live, work, and approach healthcare. For plastic surgery, it also accelerated innovations in safety, patient communication, and treatment protocols. While the pandemic has passed, the lessons we learned remain deeply valuable.

Patients can feel confident knowing that today’s plastic surgery practices are safer, cleaner, and more patient-centered than ever. Here’s how COVID-19 continues to influence modern care.

Enhanced Infection Control Standards

During the height of COVID-19, strict protocols were introduced to minimize risk. Many of these measures have become standard practice, including:

  • Rigorous sterilization of surgical suites and equipment
  • Advanced air filtration and purification systems
  • Reduced-touch environments in consultation and recovery rooms
  • Regular staff training in infection prevention

These improvements have raised the overall standard of safety, benefiting all patients—not just during a pandemic.

Telehealth and Virtual Consultations

One of the most positive outcomes of COVID-19 was the rise of telehealth. Today, virtual consultations are a staple of modern plastic surgery. Patients can:

  • Meet with their surgeon from the comfort of home
  • Review treatment options, risks, and benefits
  • Ask pre- and post-operative questions without multiple in-office visits

This makes the process more convenient and accessible while still maintaining the high level of personalized care patients expect.

Personalized Patient Screening

COVID-19 highlighted the importance of tailoring care to each patient’s health background. :, pre-operative evaluations are more detailed than ever, including:

  • Comprehensive medical history reviews
  • Individualized risk assessments
  • Customized recovery planning for optimal healing

This approach ensures that every patient receives care designed specifically for their safety and long-term results.

A Culture of Safety Beyond the Pandemic

While COVID-19 was the catalyst, the real benefit has been a permanent culture of safety in plastic surgery. Patients today can expect:

  • Transparent communication about risks and precautions
  • Safer surgical environments
  • A stronger emphasis on long-term wellness and recovery

These practices continue to provide peace of mind for patients seeking both surgical and non-surgical procedures.

VASER Assisted Liposuction (Ultrasonic Cavitation) : A Non-Surgical Solution for Stubborn Fat

Discover how ultrasonic cavitation works as a safe, non-surgical fat reduction treatment. Learn benefits, recovery, and why patients love it.

Introduction

Non-surgical body contouring continues to be one of the most in-demand aesthetic treatments. Patients are looking for ways to slim down, tone up, and feel confident—without the downtime of traditional liposuction.

One standout option is Ultrasonic Cavitation, a treatment that uses sound wave technology to target and reduce stubborn fat cells. If you’ve been struggling with areas that don’t respond to diet and exercise, here’s what you need to know about ultrasonic cavitation:

What Is Ultrasonic Cavitation?

Ultrasonic cavitation—sometimes called “ultrasonic lipolysis” or “non-surgical fat reduction”—is a non-invasive body contouring treatment. It uses low-frequency ultrasound waves to create tiny bubbles in fat cells, causing them to break down. The body then naturally processes and eliminates these fat cells over time.

Key Benefits:

  • Non-surgical, no incisions or anesthesia required
  • Comfortable treatment with minimal downtime
  • Targets stubborn fat in common problem areas (abdomen, thighs, flanks, arms)
  • Results can be seen after a series of sessions

Ultrasonic Cavitation: What’s New?

Technology has advanced significantly in recent years. Today’s ultrasonic cavitation devices are:

  • More Precise: Energy is better targeted, leading to more consistent results
  • Safer: Improved safety features make treatments more comfortable and reduce risk of side effects
  • Combination-Friendly: Many patients pair cavitation with radiofrequency skin tightening or lymphatic drainage for enhanced results
  • Faster Treatments: Sessions are shorter, often under 40 minutes, making them easier to fit into busy schedules

What to Expect During Treatment

  • Duration: About 30–40 minutes per area
  • Sensation: Gentle warming or buzzing—most patients find it relaxing
  • Downtime: None. You can return to work or daily activities immediately
  • Results: Noticeable improvements often begin after 3–5 sessions, with best results after a full treatment series

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Ultrasonic cavitation is best for:

  • Patients close to their ideal body weight who want to smooth or refine problem areas
  • Those looking for a non-surgical alternative to liposuction
  • People with realistic expectations (not a weight-loss solution, but a body-shaping tool)

Ultrasonic Cavitation vs. Liposuction

  • Cavitation: Non-surgical, no recovery time, gradual results
  • Liposuction: Surgical, more dramatic results, requires anesthesia and downtime

For many patients, ultrasonic cavitation provides the perfect balance—noticeable contouring without the risks of surgery.
